The fact that I am writing this tribute speaks volumes to the man that Mr. McCuen was. I was born a generation after him, I did not attend Lincoln and I hardly new this wonderful gentleman. Yet, he positively impacted my life just by being himself. I was a busy/athletic South End youth when Coach was giving of his time via basketball games and at the boys club. I was not fortunate enough to know him as "Coach Mac" or "Jimbo", but my teammates and I knew him as the "Nacho Cheese Man" (I think it had to do with the mustache)...we knew him as the greatest ref that we ever had growing up. Yep - Mr. McCuen influenced us as an official on the court. That speaks volumes to what we saw in him. He was fair yet understood the ins and outs of competition, he was serious about his role yet fun and funny, he had high standards yet could relate to kids, and he was a role model who built positive relationships and made others feel good about themselves. I only knew him through this small piece of his life, but I am guessing if this was a microcosm of who he was, then those around him enjoyed a man who loved life and loved others. He came across as a man of great integrity and class, one who lived life the right way, putting others first and working to make our community a better place. I am a better man, a better educator and a better husband/father because of my path crossing with Mr. McCuen's. I thank you Sir & I send warm blessings to your family - until you all meet again...God Bless!
