Obituary for D. Janet Clayton

D. Janet Clayton
A loving, quiet, strong support for friends and family, Dorothy Janet (McCord) Clayton shared her joy of cooking and baking with many.
Born in Oakland, CA and raised in Napa, Janet was told by a high school counselor that women would never get to work with computers. She quietly took classes in business anyway. She found her way into computers through the banking industry and was eventually hired to manage programmers at the Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley. She then met and married the IBM repairman, Richard Clayton Sr. This may have been the first computer marriage. She and Dick were a perfect match. They had a daughter, Andrea.
As a housewife, she baked bread and cookies, played practical jokes, sewed clothes for Andrea, and even coordinated a school fundraiser cookbook.
After her step son Rick moved in she supported Rick and Dick with their Boy Scout activities eventually working at the local council trading post.
She tried her hand a Real Estate but it was not the right place for her, requiring more time than she was willing to give.
After Dick retired from IBM and they moved to Tacoma, WA, she helped with his disaster recovery consulting firm and supported his steadfast love for the Sea Scout Ship Odyssey where he served for 15 years as lead skipper.
A lifelong Christian Scientist, she expressed her love for God and man in her patience, calm and gentle presence and by being a mother to many of her daughter’s friends.
She leaves behind daughter Andrea (Carl) and son Rick (Shelly); grandchildren Matthew and Melanie.
There will be no services. Any loving contributions should be sent to the SSS Odyssey care of Captain Bud Bronson, lebronson@gmail.com or (253) 318-2533. Please leave notes at condolences and tributes.
