Obituary

A diverse and complex man, Franklin Darwin Slagel never let any obstacle set in his way. He was born June 3, 1927 and passed away in his sleep on January 7, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. Frank was born in Pierre SD to George and Margaret Slagel, the family settled in Southern Idaho where he spent his younger years with his 9 brothers and sisters, as brother Larry didn’t come along until everyone else was grown. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 serving on the USS Salamaua in WW II. After an honorable discharge, he married Pauline Garcia in Elko NV in 1946 and that union brought 3 children, Lyle Dean, Denis and Debbie. Frank took his young family and moved to Oregon in which they farmed, spent years doing mechanic work, owned an auto shop, gas station and loved automobiles. The family moved back to Idaho where he taught his boys a love for drag racing, ½ mile racing, and rebuilt a boat from the ground up, in which he named The Little Deb after his daughter. Frank’s greatest love was when he was sitting in the drivers seat of an 18-wheeler, which he spent the rest of his life doing as a profession up until just a few years prior to his death. Frank’s daughter Debbie loved horses and rodeos, so he followed her as much as he could. He later shared that love with his grandkids and great grandkids who pursued the rodeo trail. Frank spent the later years of his life married to Arlene Slagel who preceded him in death in August of 2019. Frank had a fighting spirit, a love of life and was always on the go. He will be forever missed. Frank is survived by his children Lyle Dean (Tina) Slagel, Denis (Judith) Slagel, Debbie (John) Sparks, step daughter Sue (Steve) Hennigar, 11 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren and his sweet little dogs Cindy and Mindy. A celebration of life is to be held at a future date in Jerome ID.
