Obituary for Kathleen Toohey Hardin

Kathleen (Toohey) Hardin, age 74 of Tacoma, WA, passed peacefully into her heavenly life on Monday, February 5th, 2024 at home surrounded by her family’s love.

Instead of flowers, memorials can be directed to: The National Kidney Foundation

Kathy was born on February 4th, 1950, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the daughter of Robert and Colleen Toohey. She moved with her parents and their growing family to Pipestone, MN, then to Fort Dodge, IA, where she attended Corpus Christi Catholic Elementary and St. Edmonds High School.

Kathy attended Mount Marty College in Yankton, S.D., moved with her family for a short time to Reno, NV, and then to Decatur, AL, where she met and married her husband Richard (Ricky) Hardin. Kathy and Ricky have three children: Stephanie, John, and Ricky Hardin, all residing in the state of Washington.

Kathy earned her associate degree in medical records from Calhoun State College outside Decatur, AL, and worked for years as a Medical Records Administrator for Swedish Hospital and Auburn General.

The first of ten siblings, Kathy was often the secondary caretaker of the younger children. Her characteristic love and care of children followed her throughout her life as she cared for her own three children and whenever called upon her nieces and nephews. Kathy’s life joy was watching her children, nieces and nephews, and her grandchildren play, engage in life, and grow.

Kathy was an active volunteer with the Federal Way Symphony. She loved the novel “Gone with the Wind”, football, murder mysteries, and the “Oscars”. Kathy prayed the rosary often and treasured her collection of over 25 rosaries. She carried on her mother's love for holidays, celebrations, and family traditions.
She was fond of saying that her siblings were her best friends.

Kathy is lovingly remembered by her children John, Stephanie, and Ricky Hardin, her grandchildren Jackson and Dyani, her siblings Bob (Susan) Toohey, Mary (Karl) Ostby, Sara (John) Troupe, Daniel Toohey Elizabeth (Tom) Crow, and Jennifer (Ed) Chaves, and her many nieces and nephews.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, her former husband Rick, and her sisters Margaret Ann Toohey, Colleen (Toohey) Gutierrez, and Terri (Toohey) Laskis.
