Obituary for Jurdy Lucas Smith

Jurdy Lucas Smith, 85, passed away peacefully in his sleep 16 Oct 2019 in Tacoma Washington. Born on March 3, 1934 in Swainsboro, Georgia. Jurdy was a brilliant man with a lust for learning. A voracious reader since childhood, he continued his quest for knowledge his entire life. He served in the US Army for 31 years, retiring as a Sergeant Major in the Military Intelligence branch. Stationed in Germany during the Cold War, Jurdy was an interrogator of defecting scientists. To establish their bona fides, he tested them using complex mathematical constructions, a self-taught skill of the highest order. After retirement, he achieved a Master of Science Systems Analysis, and continued to work as a computer systems analyst for the Army for 14 years.
Jurdy is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ulla-Helena Wilkman-Smith, brother Wayne in Florida, and sister Jane Winter in Georgia. He will be interred at Tahoma National Cemetery. Tributes and condolences may be made at www.tacomamausoleum.com.
