Obituary for Adelia Alvina Witt (Olson)

Adelia was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. She and her 3 sisters lived with their parents along the Mendota River for many years, surviving several floods. She graduated from High School at age 17 and was married to Allen Witt, a young electrical engineer, just over a year later on August 12, 1950. They immediately started a family in Minnesota and eventually had seven children together between 1951 and 1963. Because of Allen’s employment installing and repairing missile launchers on naval vessels, they moved between Minnesota where the company’s main plant was located and coastal areas where there were shipyards. The first relocation was to Virginia with their 3 oldest children for several months. Later they would split time between Washington State (living in Bremerton or Port Orchard) and Minnesota (living in Minneapolis suburbs). Allen also went on some extended trips overseas or to other states during which times Adelia capably handled the household and cared for her children as a temporary single parent. Once Allen retired, they eventually settled in LeSueur, Minnesota. After Allen’s death, Adelia moved to Tacoma to be near her youngest daughter and two of her other daughters with disabilities joined her. When she wanted a much-needed break from direct parenting her oldest daughter came to help the youngest daughter and care for the two daughters with disabilities while Adelia was able to move to an independent senior living apartment where she spent her last days.

Adelia was preceded in death by her parents, Gertrude Olson (nee Hand and adopted as Schwartz) and Stanley Olson; her husband Allen; her three younger sisters and spouses: Lamyra Olson, Arlene (Stan) Remick, and Beverly (Bob) Degel; and her son Robert Witt.

Adelia is survived by six of her children and spouses: Patricia Witt, Richard Witt, David (Rhonda) Witt, Katherine Witt, Susan (Robert) Rogers, and Debra (Kurt) Schoville; by six grandchildren and spouses: Tom Witt, Hailey (Jeff) Golds, Nathaniel Witt, Jeremiah (Triffawna) Witt, Zechariah Witt, and Sarah Schoville; as well as 5 young great grandchildren: Douglas Golds, Floyd Golds, Nathaniel Witt Jr., Joleighna Witt, and Jedidiah Witt.

Adelia was the last of her generation in the Witt family and will be dearly missed. She was known for many things but especially her gentle kindness, great smile, love of birds and butterflies, love of gardening, voracious reading habit, and her great Christian faith.

A memorial service will be held at Southside Baptist Church in Tacoma, WA at 11 am on Monday, April 24, 2023. Memorials can be placed on this website. Adelia would appreciate any donations you care to make for general and breast cancer research in her memory.
