CREMATION

Many families today are choosing cremation.  All funeral homes advertise "cremation services", but don't be fooled!  Practically all area funeral homes use common, multiple user, off-site industrial crematories to handle their cremations.  Tacoma Mausoleum & Mortuary though owns and operates their own private, on-premise crematory ensuring you the highest standards of care, comfort and accountability.  Being an actual crematory operator and serving more cremation families every year than the majority of all other area funeral homes, we know all there is to know about cremation, and would like to share that knowledge with you so you can be an informed consumer.

Washington State allows funeral or cremation providers in this state to operate with no minimum requirements for facilities such as refrigeration, preparation rooms, and other essentials.   We at Tacoma Mausoleum & Mortuary strongly urge you to become informed.  For example, it is legal in Washington State for someone to operate a cremation service from a home, vehicle or storefront.  The crematory for such a company could be in a garage or industrial warehouse unknown to you.  If someone tells you that he will perform the cremation for one half or less than the price of most others, there is probably a reason.  Consider your satisfaction with a low-bidder service that transfers the body, improper and, perhaps, illegal refrigeration practices, extended periods of time to complete the cremation process, and staff that give you anything but a sense of confidence that everything will be handled in a professional manner.  We believe that you want value, not the problems often associated with something "cheap."

Cremation is being chosen for one out of every four deaths occurring today. The most accurate and current figures on cremation rates are collected by the Cremation Association of North America (CANA), which covers the United States and Canada. These figures project that by the year 2010 the U.S. level of cremation will be two out of every five deaths, with urban areas higher than rural.  Washington State currently has a cremation rate of 64%.

These statistics are clear indicators that the majority of families today prefer cremation services.  With this shift, it is our responsibility as funeral and cremation professionals to educate and clearly detail the process to your satisfaction.  This unfortunately is rare and not the normal practice for funeral homes or cremation services in our area.  No other funeral or cremation provider can answer these 4 questions well; in fact the answers you will hear are very troubling.
